Once you have successfully completed your CNA classes in New York, you will need to pass both the New York State-approved clinical skills performance examination and the New York State Aide Competency Examination. The clinical skills exam consists of the candidate successfully performing five selected nurse aide skills. The competency exam is 50 multiple choice and 10 reading comprehension questions. Maintaining Your Certification

Your CNA certification must be renewed every two years. You should receive a reminder notice roughly 45 days before expiration to submit for re-certification. In order to qualify for re-certification, you will need to have worked and paid as a certified nurse aide for at least seven hours within the previous 24 months.
